What, Why, Who, How

I am drawn to the human figure because of its familiarity and accessibility. With clay being an immediate and responsive medium , I try to ride the line between the representative and the expressive.  Above all, the challenge is to turn a lifeless material into something that expresses or captures emotion and gesture.

A ceramic surface is quite unique with its combination of chemical reactions, heat, glass and color. I have been experimenting  with the treatment of the surface through various techniques and methods accompanied by multiple glaze firings.  Most of the work is fired 4-6 times.  Most work is fired to Cone 04, but once in a while there is Cone 5 firing.

My sources and subjects vary. Sometimes I am referencing a picture or a memory.  Other times, after the initial handling of a chunk of  clay, a figure or face will emerge and then I try to reveal the rest of the subject. My process allows me to work in different modes....sometimes I try to control the clay while other times I am simply along for the ride.
